As several thousands of you are already aware… (as if) … Me and Dave Shroeder traveled out of state into a state I’ve never been before, West Virginia. Why did we go you ask? I am not entirely sure to tell you all the truth. Dave was feeling spontaneous, and wanted to see some mountains. I know how feeling spontaneous goes, so I tagged along. Here is a detailed debriefing of what we did:
5:30 AM:
Holy crap, what? You want to know what wakes me up in the morning? My tv. That’s right, it turns on when I tell it to and it woke me up at 5:30 in the morning. At first you can guess that I wasnt all there at that hour so I was like, “no, no, no!” and turned the tv off, 2 minutes later I was like OH! So I was ready in an hour.
7:00 AM
Dave shows up at my front door, and we were out of there! Woo! Everyone knows that the trip there is always fun, fun fun fun. And it was! Sure enough the trip was 10 hours to the campsite, but we got to see the land as it shifted here and there, and hills became mountains, and the mountains got bigger the further we went. Sure enough they didnt even touch the rocky mountains when it came to size, but they both look fantastic. I might have to say when it comes to the outdoors, the appalations look more amazing.
5:00 PM
We arrive at Grandview National Park, and that’s the first thing we see when we arrive at the visitors center, a pretty nice lookout spot, but not the best, which comes later. We get a butt-load of information packets on nearby camping sites, and we go for a drive to the best site.
The drive to the campsites is something to be talked about. That is some creepy stuff! There goes Dave going 60 mph on a very very curved road. Dave was switching gears left and right to get it right, so we dont accidentally drive off of a cliff. He was actually speeding too, man… Oh and something else to mention, I think Dave said the word “beautiful” on an average of about 20-25 times a day, not sure though.
6:00PM
We get to the campsites. The first one we go see is one called “Army Camp” the name alone got me uninterested, but Dave said the site was not “primitive” enough, so we went to check out Glade Creek. It took us forever, but we finally found it, and we knew then, THIS was our site. There wasnt any other campers, but that’s just because this was simply just a strange time to go camping. Dave told me later that first night that the only reason he chose this place was because of a picture he saw on Google images, and said, “I want to go there!” Nuts!
The first thing we did was set up the campsite, the tent took a few minutes, than after that we ate dinner. Dave had to bust out a cover to keep the food dry. It rained the first night, so we actually retired early, at around 8-8:30 at night, we had a big day ahead of us.
Saturday, 7:30 AM
Me and Dave woke up. It was a new day, and we had lots of things in store, but first, time for breakfast. Friday night I slept remarkably well for pouring rain overhead, and trains coming by every once in a while. In the morning we found a lot of our stuff wet, because the tent leaked, which wasnt too good.
8:30 AM
Me and Dave started off the ultimate hike of all time! Not really, but it came close if ever I saw one. Dave wanted to take an 11 mile hike, he’s insane. We started off on that trail, but I kid you not, by the time we hit the third mile, it already felt like 6. The altitude and going up and down mountains makes hikes harder than here in flat Indiana. So we stopped there, ate lunch, and headed back. Though I have to admit, some of the best views were seen on that hike, the only problem was, one trip, and down you tumble, down to your death.
3:00 PM
We got in the car and drove to the top of the New River Gorge in Grandview. This was the ultimate lookout spot, but not for Dave as he hopped off the safety platform onto the rock, just for a photo opportunity! Was he done there you ask? Heck no, he did it again, and again! In different spots! Everytime, I always said, “man, if you fall,” cause even he said it was pretty scary at parts. I’m just glad I never do that much stuff without thinking.
5:00 PM
We got back to the campsite and had dinner. We set up a fire, and cooked some beef stick, they were suprisingly delicious! We even got some marshmellows, but couldn’t cook them, cause Mother Nature decided to come back to show her ugly face again, and rain, this time earlier than before. So we had to pack up and go to bed.
9:30 PM
I had to go to the bathroom, and if you have ever been to the woods at night, you know what I am talking about, it is nothing but black out there! Shut your eyes, there is no difference, you are simply blind, so I took Daves flashlight, and went for a jog in the pouring rain, in the night. It was freaky! The bathroom was probably a quarter mile away, so a half mile round trip. I dont really enjoy going to the bathroom in the woods, let alone pitch black, so I had to go to the public bathroom. Man, I was half expecting Freddy or Jason to jump in front of me and show their ugly faces! *shudders* there was also this guy, who was no joke, fishing in the pouring rain until 10:30 at night, kind of creeped us out.
Sunday, 6:50 AM
We wake up, time to put everything away. Which sucked so bad! I was cold, tired, and muddy, put those together, what do you get, a big lump of CRAP, that’s what. I hated putting everything away, the sand rubbed against the mud and coldness of my hands. It was rough! Dont forget painful. Once everything was finally put away, we set out for the road. As I said earlier, the trip there is fun! The way back is just ughugughugh are we there yet???? Can’t wait to get home type of deal. Then all the mountains vanished, and we got stuck with crappy flat land. Oh well, home sweet home, I guess.
Peace Out!
